Traditional floral piece on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large floral tattoo wraps across the thigh, featuring three open flowers in red and orange, two rosebuds and several serrated leaves. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills are typical of traditional American-style work, with green stems and leaves filling the gaps. Colour ink dominates the design against the bare skin, and the image is framed close around the leg with a patterned fabric and blue cloth visible at the top.

Ada had the cabin side of the Constance propped on two trestles in the boatyard at Keadby, and the morning fog was still lifting off the water when Bert Penhale came down the towpath with his hands in his coat pockets. "She's sold, then," he said. "Buyer wants roses. Proper ones, not those stickers from the chandler's."

She had her father's old pattern book open on the bench, its corners soft as bread. Three open flowers, two buds, leaves cut with a serrated edge like a saw blade. He had painted these on every boat between here and Gainsborough for thirty years, and he had never once let anyone outline them in anything but black. She mixed the vermilion with a drop of white, then the ochre for the centres, and worked from the middle outward, the way he taught her, so the wet paint wouldn't drag.
By noon the largest rose was done and she had sketched the second. Bert came back with two teas in chipped mugs and stood at her shoulder without speaking, which was how she knew he approved. "Your dad always kept one bud crooked," he said. "Said it looked like it was leaning in to listen."
She left the bud crooked. When the varnish went on that evening, the lamp from the office caught the red and it looked less like paint than something growing out of the wood, the leaves dark green along the planks. The water below the hull held the whole thing upside down, flowers and all, and for a moment the Constance seemed to be floating on a garden that had been turned over to look at the sky.
