Crowned heart with roses on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A crown sits above a heart held between two hands, with pink roses and green leaves curling out to the left and right. The design is outlined in dark, fairly bold linework, with soft tan shading inside the heart and hands. Pink, green and tan ink fill the design against the skin of the foot, which fills most of the frame.

Mrs Dunleavy had kept the boarding house at the end of Strand Row for thirty years, and she still set out four cups for the fishermen's wives who came on Thursdays to sit by her range and wait for news. On the morning the tinker's boy brought the drawing, she was scouring the kettle and did not look up. "Pin it on the dresser," she said. "I'll see to it when the bread's out."

The drawing was a crowned heart held between two hands, the way the Galway silversmiths had always made them, and the roses were her husband Patrick's notion. He had drawn the leaves himself on the back of a fish bill, curling them out to either side like arms that could not quite reach each other. She had told him roses were for dinner dances and not for men who sold herring. He had laughed and said a rose was just a thing that wanted to be looked at, which was no bad thing for a wife to have on a wall.
Patrick took the Mary Anne out in February and she did not come back. The insurance man came with his forms and his hat, and the wives came with their cups and their silence, and for a long while Mrs Dunleavy let the drawing stay curled in its drawer.
In April the boy came again, this time with a tin of inks and a stranger who was going to the islands on the next boat. The stranger looked at the drawing a long time, then at the widow, and said he could carry the crown and the hands across the sea and bring back whatever she wanted pricked in their place. She sent him away with the roses and kept the heart for herself, and the next Thursday she set out five cups.
