The wind came down from the hill the morning the twins quarrelled over the orchard gate, and it took every petal off the almond trees before either of them could reach the path. Corra, the elder, stood with her hand on the latch and said nothing. Her brother Ansel kicked the gatepost until the bark split.

Their mother had married them to the same star, the old woman in the next village always said, which was why they could never agree on which way was east. When one wanted rain the other wanted sun. When one laughed at the baker the other cried for his bread. Their father had carved a pair of crescents into the lintel above the door so that every guest would know the house held two hearts that did not beat in time.

Corra went out into the orchard that night with a bowl of milk and knelt among the bare branches. She asked the wind to give back what it had taken. It did not answer, but in the grey light a single petal rose from the grass, then another, then a whole drift of them, pink at the edges and dark red at the heart, circling the place where her brother slept. Ansel woke to find them pressed against his palm and across his shoulder, and he understood, for once, what she had been carrying all along.

They walked to the market together after that, and the petals followed them, settling on the road behind like a second path that only the two of them could see.
