Red hearts and fine line on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A cluster of red-filled hearts, each outlined in black, climbs diagonally across the upper chest. A thin black line curls around the hearts and loops at the lower left, giving a delicate, hand-drawn look. The skin is lit softly against a black lace bra, with a hand pulling the lace at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the Thanet coast had been trying all morning to take the balloons, and by noon Ada Pryce had stopped holding the string and let it run loose through her fingers. Seven red hearts bobbed above the promenade on a single black thread, each one fat and glossy, each one tied to the next with a little curl of cord. A herring gull took an interest in the top heart and followed it past the lifeboat station.

Her brother Teddy had made them for the summer fair, cutting the shapes from rubber sheeting he bought off a man in Ramsgate who dealt in old hospital stock. He had shown her the knot the night before he took the ferry to Ostend, sitting on the back step with a dinner napkin spread across his knees. Pull the loop tight, he said, but never so tight it pinches the heart. A good line of hearts wants room to lean.

Ada did not chase the gull. She walked to the end of the groyne, where Harold Vine was coiling rope with the patience of a man who had outlived three coxswains, and asked him how long a thing could stay up in a wind like this. He squinted at the hearts, then at her, and said as long as somebody kept a hand on the stem. So she held on, and the line swayed out over the grey water, leaning the way Teddy had promised it would.

When the tide turned she untied the seventh heart herself, gave its thread to a boy with sticky fingers, and kept the little knot in her pocket, where it stayed warm all the way home.
