Pink flowers, eye and star on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm covered in a large tattoo of two pink peony-style flowers with green leaves, an eye inside a triangle at the top, and a dark star on the left. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft blended shading and loose watercolour-style splashes of blue, green and yellow. The design fills the frame from the upper edge to the lower left, with a gold bangle visible at the top.

The peonies on Scarrow were older than the lighthouse, and the keeper's widow swore they only bloomed when someone was about to leave. I had come over on the Tuesday boat with a tin trunk of watercolours and a letter from the mainland museum asking me to record whatever was left of the walled garden before the sea took the wall. I did not believe her. I believed in paper, pigment and the honest sum of what I could see.

The garden was a square of nettles and broken brick behind the chapel, and in its middle stood three bushes heavy with blooms the size of my fist, pink as a fresh cut. Above the chapel door someone had carved a triangle with an eye inside it, the paint long gone, and the wind moved through the gap with a thin whistle. Mrs Pryce said the eye was for the boats, so the sea would keep watching them. The black star scratched beside it was for the men who never came home. I asked her which was which. She pointed the teapot at the window and said I would work it out.
I painted for nine days. On the last evening the wind dropped and the water in my jar turned the colour of the petals. I layered the reds carefully, then found the edges had run into the blue of the bay beyond the wall, where the tide came over the rocks in bright green ribbons. I stopped trying to keep them apart.
When I packed the trunk I left the sheets on the chapel step, weighted with a stone. In the morning the boat was late and the paper was gone. On the step lay one peony, still wet, its petals closed tight as a fist, and I understood that Mrs Pryce had been right about the leaving, though not about who would do it.
