Neo-traditional full sleeve with owl and roses

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A full sleeve shown from four angles, covering the upper arm down towards the wrist. It includes a woman's profile framed by a blue headscarf, an owl, a pocket watch, a rabbit, a teacup, a mouse and several red and peach roses, linked by green leaves and blue flowers. The bold outlines and saturated colours sit on a purple watercolour-style background.

The clock above the proving cabinet says twenty to four, though you set it by the radio ten minutes ago and it has been running ahead ever since the Okonedo wedding cake went in. Flour hangs in the light of the one bulb you bothered to switch on. Somewhere behind the sacks a mouse is working through the demerara, and you have given up pretending you will catch it.

Dessa from the flat upstairs comes down the back stairs in her dressing gown, asking for a loaf she has not paid for yet. You give her the heel of yesterday's rye and a cup of tea in the chipped china with the roses, the one nobody else is allowed to touch. She says the owl on the shelf has been staring at her all week. You tell her it has always stared. It was your mother's, and it stared at her too, across the same counter, through forty winters of early starts.

The dough for the morning rolls needs knocking back before the first van, and your hands know the rhythm better than you do. Fold, turn, press. The tin shaped like a rabbit has sat on the top shelf since spring, and you realise you have been waiting for a child to ask for it. Dessa sips her tea and asks what the owl is waiting for. You say it is waiting for the same thing you are, which is for the day to be a sensible hour.

At ten to five you open the oven and the whole room fills with warm bread, and the clock, for once, agrees with you.
