Pink lily tattoo on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A pink lily with speckled petals and yellow-tipped stamens sits on the upper back, with green stems and leaves trailing down and to the left. The petals use soft shading and highlights to give a three-dimensional look against the skin. Pinks dominate the flower while the foliage is rendered in muted greens, on an otherwise plain background of skin.

The bulbs came to you in a paper sack from a nursery outside Spalding, twelve of them, grey and papery as old onions, and the label said only stargazer. You put them in the bed under the south wall because nobody else wanted that bed, and then you forgot them through a wet March.

By June the spears were up, pushing through the bindweed as if they had something to prove. Mrs Okafor from number nine leaned over the fence with her secateurs and said they would flop the moment the buds opened, that lilies always did in the rain. You told her to wait and see. She waited, with a cup of tea balanced on her side of the fence, which was a kind of wager.

The first flower opened on a Tuesday, a pink so bright it looked wet, every petal freckled dark as though someone had flicked a loaded brush at it. The stamens were tipped in a yellow that came off on your thumb. You stood there with the dog's lead in one hand and watched a bee crawl inside as though it had been invited.

In August the stems leaned, just as she had said they would, and you tied them to bamboo canes with strips of an old tea towel. When she came round with a trowel and asked for a bulb for her own bed, you dug one out with the soil still clinging to it and passed it across the fence, roots first. Tell her it needs the sun. Tell her it will sulk the first year, and then it will not.
