Pink lilies with swirls on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Three pink lilies with shaded petals, speckled markings and green stems sit on the ankle and lower leg, with a few open blooms overlapping. Black scrolling linework frames the flowers and curls off the top and bottom of the design. Soft pink and green shading gives the flowers volume against the skin, and the composition runs diagonally up the leg.

The wind had backed north-east by the time the Mary Keel cleared the breakwater, and Dad was already swearing at the plotter the way he swore at weather, fondly and without much hope. I sat on the hatch with a jam jar between my boots. Inside it, three stargazer lilies from the garden had gone soft at the edges, their pink petals freckled dark as if someone had flicked a brush at them. Mum had cut them the morning she left for the hospital in Truro, and I had carried them down to the harbour because I could not think where else to put them.

Nobody on the fleet talked about that winter. They talked about the price of monkfish and the Dutch boats poaching off the Smalls. Still, the crew kept finding reasons to come aft and look at the jar. Tom Pascoe, who had fished out of Newlyn since before decimals, said lilies were bad luck aboard, then brought me a tin mug of tea and set it down beside the flowers without a word.
We hauled the pots by noon. The creel lines came up black and weedy, curling over the gunwale like the scrollwork Mum used to draw on the backs of my school jotters, loops that went round and round before they found the point. A crab got tangled in one, and I laughed for the first time in weeks, and Dad looked round at the sound as though he had forgotten it was allowed.
On the run home a gannet dived beside us and came up with nothing. I took the jar to the rail and tipped the water over the side. The lilies went under the wake, their petals opening for a second before the sea took them. Dad put his hand on my shoulder and said we would sell the catch in the morning. I said yes, and it was the first thing I had said all day that was true.
