Pink lotus flowers on lower back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman's lower back is shown from behind, with a tattoo of pink lotus blooms, buds and dark grey lotus leaves rising from faint water ripples. The petals and leaves are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, giving a three-dimensional look. Bright pink and deep grey dominate the composition, which is centred on the lower spine and angled slightly to the side.

Sit closer, you lot, the gulls won't mind. No, that's not the tide, that's Mrs Abernethy's bucket, leave it be. Now, the pond behind the net lofts was grey as a slate roof the year the Carrick girl came down the quay in one shoe with a letter for the harbourmaster. Nothing grew in that mud, not even nettles.

She knelt at the edge and pressed a single seed into the silt with her thumb, and the net-loft men laughed, because seeds don't take in pond sludge and everybody knew it. Every morning after that she came back with a bit of rope and a tin of water from her father's boat, and dropped one more seed in, ring after ring, until the ripples ran out past the pilings and came back again.
Here's the thing about lotus, my darlings. The leaves come up first, dark as wet rope, laid flat on the water so the rain beads and rolls off without leaving a mark. Then the buds lift on their long stalks, pink as a cheap sweet, and they open only when the sun is full on them, and they open all at once, like a door. By the second summer the pond was a field of them, and the men who laughed stood on the quay with their caps in their hands, not knowing where to put their eyes.
She never did read the letter, they say. She fed it to the gulls. Some folk reckon that was the whole of her quarrel with the harbour. Others reckon she was only telling it the mud was never the trouble. Pick whichever you like. The pond is still there, behind the lofts, and it still opens when nobody is looking.
