Pink rose sleeve with fan and chest roses
Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo
A woman wears a grey crop top lifted to show a cluster of pink roses with green leaves tattooed below the chest. Her arm carries a sleeve of bold-outlined roses in pink and red with dark green foliage, and a green fan motif sits near her wrist. The tattoos use solid colour with heavy black outlines and are shown against a pale background.

Sit yourself down by the range, and mind the cat, she has no manners. You want the rose story, the one about the fan? Right then. Up at Hollin Row the fan house stood on the rise above the pit, painted green as a pond, and it turned day and night to draw the bad air out of the workings. Nobody thought much about it until the summer Tom Kell took the night shift on it.

His wife Nell hated the bare yard. She carried four pink cabbage roses up from the cutting in a tin bath and pushed them into the black soil under the fan house wall. Folk laughed. Coal dust settled on every petal by Friday and the blooms went the colour of old brick. But she watered them with the rinse from the kettle and tied their stems to the railings with strips of her Sunday petticoat, and by August they were climbing the iron like they owned it.
In October the fan stopped at half past two in the morning. The whole village woke to the silence. Tom was down the shaft with the rescue men, and Nell went up the hill in her nightdress with a lamp, past the roses, to the fan house door. The belt had snapped. She knew nothing about belts, so she stood under the great blades and talked to the thing the way she talked to her roses, low and steady, until the engineer came running from the works.
The fan was turning by dawn. Tom came up the shaft grey as ash and found his wife asleep on a heap of sacks, a red petal stuck to her cheek and the green fan above her turning slow as breath. So when you see a fan and a rose inked together, you know somebody up top was keeping watch.
