Pink lotus on the lower back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A stylised lotus flower with a solid pink fill and soft shading at the edges of its petals. A spiral sits in the centre of the upper petal, and small dots sit on either side of the design. The lotus is centred on bare skin across the lower back, with a hand and a ring visible at the right edge.

Hush now, and mind the stair, because the steps are wet and I am too old to fetch you off the rocks a second time. Sit where the lamp can't blind you. There. You asked why the lantern room was painted rose the spring the sea came over the breakwater, and I'll tell you, though you won't believe the half of it.

There was a flower in the cove below, Tobias always called it the lotus, though nobody on this coast had ever seen one. It grew out of the black silt at low water, a pink thing with its petals curled tight as a fist. Every morning it opened a little further, and in the heart of its highest petal sat a spiral, round and round, like the coil of rope on the winch house floor. Tobias swore the spiral turned the wrong way on wet days.
That spring the fog came in thick as wool, and the herring boats were out past the Sow. The flower had opened fully that night, and the spray lifted off its edges in little beads, dark dots scattered on the air either side of it. The fishermen saw that pink glow through the murk and steered by it. Tobias climbed up here with a tin of lime wash and painted the glass the same rose as those petals, so the beam came out pink, and every boat came home.
Next morning I went down to the cove. There was nothing but grey silt and one spiral pressed into the mud, and I have stood at this window every evening since, waiting to see the light turn the wrong way.
