Red lotus on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A single lotus flower with a long curved stem sits on the upper arm, with a smaller closed bud near the shoulder. The linework is fine and delicate, with the petals filled in soft red and magenta shading that fades toward the edges. The flower is centred against pale skin, with a blurred background and a dark garment at the right edge.

Edie had been told the lotus would not survive a northern winter, and for eleven years it hadn't needed to. The pond behind the old glassworks in Stourbridge held water the colour of weak tea, and in July the flowers came up through it anyway, pink at the edges where the light reached them and rose-red at the heart. Her grandfather had carried the first tuber in a biscuit tin on the train from Kent, wrapped in wet newspaper, and he had sworn it would open for anyone patient enough to sit on the wall and wait.

Most mornings she sat there with a flask of tea and her sketchbook, drawing the same stem again and again because the stem never came out right. It curved too hard, or not hard enough. The smaller bud beside it stayed shut for days, then one morning in August it loosened all at once, the petals peeling back like a letter being unfolded by someone who had decided to forgive you.
The council wanted the pond filled in by September. A man in a yellow jacket had pinned a notice to the gate, and Edie read it twice before folding it into her pocket beside the sketch she had finished that morning. She went down to the water with a jam jar and a spoon and lifted the bud, the one nearest the wall, very carefully into the jar.
She carried it home along the canal towpath, the jar held against her chest as though it might still open if she kept it warm enough. By the lock the petals had spread another finger's width, and Edie stopped composing her complaint to the council and simply walked on, the glass warm against her ribs.
