Pink rose tattoo on the chest

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A pink rose in full bloom sits on the skin, with its petals drawn in soft layers of pink and lilac. Green leaves and a bud appear at the edges, with washes of teal and green fading into the surrounding skin. The shading is smooth and blended, and the colour dominates the close, slightly angled composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamplighters had gone home by the time Mirela came down the steps of the flower exchange, carrying the last pink rose of the season in a jar of rainwater. The city was quiet in the way it only got after two bells, when the canal turned the colour of pewter and the gulls stopped complaining. She had sold everything else. The rose had been kept back for a man who never came.

Her grandmother used to say that roses picked in the dark keep their colour longer, and that a bloom cut under a wet moon will blush at whoever holds it. Mirela did not believe it. She walked the bridge to Tallow Street anyway, past the shuttered bakery and the cats asleep on the crates, watching the petals slide from pink to lilac each time a streetlamp passed over them.

At the foot of the stairs she found the lamplighter's boy sitting with his knees up, crying into a teal scarf over a dead lantern. The wind had taken his flame. Mirela had no matches, only the rose. She eased out the palest petal and pressed it to the warm glass of the lantern. It caught the way damp paper catches, slowly, then all at once, and the light climbed out through the iron ribs as green as a leaf.

The boy wiped his face and asked what she wanted for it. She said nothing. The rose kept its blush for the rest of the night, and every lamp on Tallow Street stayed lit until morning, which is why the old people still leave a candle in the window for the man who never came.
