Pink lotus within a mandala on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A realistically shaded pink lotus flower sits at the centre of a black linework mandala with paisley-like scrolls, dotted accents and leaf motifs. Soft teal shading behind the petals and an orange centre add colour to the otherwise black ornamental outline. The design is centred on the upper back and fills most of the frame against lightly freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gather in close, you lot, and mind the sawdust, because this is the tale of the lotus that grew in the bottom of a tin bath behind the Mardle Fair. Nobody planted it. Old Pim Tallow swore it came up from a seed that fell out of a sailor's pocket in Hull, and the sailor was already dead by then, so who was to say. Every spring it opened one pink bloom, and every spring the fairground horses turned their heads to look at it.

The ringmaster, a woman called Dorrie Vane with a voice like a cracked bell, wanted it for the big top. She had a mandala painted on canvas to hang behind it, all scrolls and little black dots, the kind of pattern you'd only see on a dressmaker's pattern sheet or the inside of a clock. The lotus refused to be moved. It sat in its bath and it went on opening, petal over petal, until the teal light off the water lay on everything around it, and the orange heart of it glowed like a lamp left on in a window.

So Dorrie gave up and built the tent around the bath instead. And that, my darlings, is why the Mardle Fair has never once packed up its stage in the same field it arrived in. The lotus will not be carried. Whenever the wagons roll, the bath stays put, the bloom stays open, and the whole fair comes back to it, the way a moth comes back to a lamp that won't go out.
