Pink magnolia flower on a foot

Realism · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A pink magnolia-style flower with petals, a closed bud and green leaves is tattooed across the top of a bare foot, with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame. The petals use soft shading and fine highlights to create a three-dimensional, lifelike effect. The pink and green colours stand out against the pale skin and a white paper background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The magnolia at Hollin Farm came into flower the same week the last of the ewes went to market, which my grandmother said was no sort of timing for a tree. Nobody had planted it. It had come up beside the midden wall, a sapling no one could account for, and when old Tomas Reed went to cut it back in January he found the buds already swelling, fat and furred and pink as a baby's ear.

Frost came down that night like a dropped sheet. Tomas stood in the yard with his lantern and his billhook and could not bring himself to swing it. He told the Widow Harte in the lane the next morning, and she laughed at him, and then she came up the track herself in her good boots to look. The petals were open by then, pale rose at the edges, cupped against the grey, and the frost lay on them like sugar on a cake and did not break them.

So they left it. Through February the bud kept opening, one cup after another, and the rooks came to sit in the bare branches and complain. Nobody said it aloud, but everyone on the farm started speaking a little softer near the wall, the way you do at a sickbed. Tomas took to bringing his tea out there at dawn. He said the flowers did not care whether the year was ready for them. They simply went on being pink.

When the thaw came in March the petals dropped all at once, a whole pink snowfall on the midden and the mud. Tomas swept them into a sack and kept it in the dairy. You will want to know if the tree lived. It did. It is taller than the barn now, and every January the buds come up fat and furred, and every January I tell my grandchildren to leave them be.
