Pink orchids with black splatter on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of a tattoo showing two pink orchids on a green stem with several buds, set against black ink splatter, brushstroke shapes and halftone dots. The orchids are shaded with soft highlights and shadows, while the black work has dotted fades spreading outwards. Magenta pink and green sit alongside black ink, and the design runs diagonally down the lower leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink-maker had been boiling pine soot for three days when the orchid seller came down the pass with his cart, and by then the whole village had stopped pretending not to look at what rode in the back under wet sacking. Nobody had seen a flower like it. Its petals were the pink of a cut plum, and its stem bent over the rim of a clay pot like a neck that had given up holding up its head.

The seller wanted salt and a roof for the winter. Ilse, who kept the lamp-house and owed nobody, gave him both on the condition that he tell her what the flower was for. He said it was for nothing, which is what people say when it is for something. In the warm room the buds began to swell one after another, green at first, then the colour of wine held up to a window.

In the thaw the cart axle snapped on the bridge and the pot went over the edge into the wet ink trough below the mill. When they fished it out, the stem was black to the first leaf and the petals were flecked with a spray of dark dots that looked like frost on glass. The seller wept and cursed and said the flower would die. It did not die. It opened two blooms in the mud, and a third bud climbed the stem in the dark.

Ilse kept the pot on her sill until the roots split it, then planted what was left against the lamp-house wall. Each spring the village stirs a little soot into their limewash, and each spring the old wall wears its black splatter with one new pink orchid rising out of it, just as Ilse said it would, though she never said when.
