Watercolour rose on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large rose in soft pink and red sits on the outer upper thigh, with green leaves at its left side. The petals are outlined in dark line work and shaded with blended washes, while loose red and green splashes spread beneath the flower in a watercolour effect. The rose fills the centre of the frame, with denim shorts at the top edge and a hand resting at the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rinse jar had gone the colour of weak tea by the time Nana Ivy reached the last petal, and I was meant to be carrying the place-card box up the aisle, not kneeling beside her on a folded tablecloth in the back kitchen of the Albion Hotel, watching her paint. She'd bought the cold-press paper in 1961 for exactly this kind of occasion and had kept it flat in a biscuit tin ever since. Her hands shook when she lifted the brush, but they never shook once it touched the paper.

Marnie had asked for a rose, the sort Ivy used to paint on every christening card in Whitstable, and Ivy had promised. Dad was tapping his watch against the sideboard by then. Ivy leaned for the green, her elbow caught the jar, and the whole thing went over. Water ran across the lower petals and red pooled into the wet paper in long, bleeding streaks, while a bloom of leaf-green spread out to the left where the brush had been dipping. I braced for her to cry. She laughed instead, a proper cackle, and said, 'Well, that's the bit that's alive.'

She flattened the sheet under the marble slab from the bar and we carried it out tucked inside the order of service. Marnie walked in with a bouquet of white stock and the rose laid flat across the top of it, the splashes trailing down over the ribbon like the flower had been dropped in a puddle on purpose. Nobody in the chapel could quite see the join where the water had gone wrong. Ivy sat in the front pew with her tin on her knees, and when the vicar asked for rings she was already smiling at the spill.
