Red rose with pearl strands on shoulder
Traditional · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A red rose with yellow highlights and green leaves sits on the shoulder and upper arm, with strands of white dotted beads looping across the petals. The design uses bold dark outlines and solid colour fills typical of traditional tattooing. The photo is taken at an angle in a studio setting, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The last train to Carlisle was already drawing its breath on platform four when Nell found the pearl necklace in the lost property tin, wrapped in a chip paper that still smelled of vinegar. Somebody had left it on a bench under the clock, and the clerk, Mr Fairbrother, had been waiting three weeks for an owner to turn up. He said nobody ever came back for jewellery that cheap. Nell said nothing. She had seen that necklace before, looped across a red velvet hat at her sister's wedding in Leeds, and she knew her sister had never once in her life gone anywhere without it.

She took the tin and the strand and walked the length of the concourse past the tea trolley and the pigeons, the rose-coloured light from the ticket hall flaring off the white beads each time she passed a window. The glass of the timetable board was cracked in one corner, the same crack it had worn since the spring. Nell pushed through the crowd to the Carlisle platform and there was her sister, leaning against a pillar with a cardboard suitcase at her feet, her shoulder bare under a cardigan she had clearly forgotten to button.
Neither of them spoke. Nell held out the strand and her sister took it, winding it twice round her fingers the way she always had when she was about to lie. The guard blew his whistle. Somewhere behind them the big red roses painted on the lamp posts shook in the draught from the engine.
"You left it on the bench," Nell said.
"I left it for you," her sister said, and stepped up into the carriage before the doors could close on her.
