Magnolia branch across the upper chest
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A branch of magnolia flowers and buds runs diagonally from the collarbone towards the shoulder on a light-skinned torso. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and fine outlines, with darker tones at the centres and folds. The design sits against a pale top and neutral background, leaving plenty of clear skin around it.

Brother Ansel had been told to draw the magnolia before the frost took it, because the abbot wanted the tree on the new almsbox, and because nobody else in the valley could draw anything that did not look like a sheep. He carried his ink stick and a bowl of rainwater up the cloister steps at first light. The branch hung over the wall where the north path bent, its flowers still shut like folded letters, grey in the early light.

He worked fast and wet, the way his master had taught him, letting the water carry the grey into the petals so the darkness pooled where the folds turned. The first flower opened under his brush. He had not meant to draw the second, but a bud on the same stem seemed to want company, and then a third leaned out from the wall as though listening. By the time the bell rang for lauds his sleeves were splashed and the page was full of drooping cups, and the abbot's secretary was waiting at the gate with his hand out for it.
The abbot looked at the drawing for a long time, then turned it over and read the back, where Ansel had written the names of the brothers who had died that winter, one beneath another, in the order they had been buried. "You have put the dead on the tree," the abbot said. "No, Father," Ansel said. "They were already there. I only found the places." The abbot folded the sheet along its crease and kept it, and that spring the magnolia flowered over the gravestones as though it had been waiting.
