The cornflowers were already out on the north side of the Col when Tomas came up the track with the mule and the news folded inside his coat. I didn't ask him to say it. I took the saddlebag from him and counted the seed packets by feel, the way my mother counted eggs, because my hands needed something to do that was not shaking.

Every spring since the year the road washed out, I have pressed the same flowers into the same ledger. Blue cornflowers for the wind, a teal thistle head that Tomas swore was a plover's egg, pale pink campion, and the red rowan berries we ate with salt when there was nothing else. Between them I pressed a painted lady's wing, which would never lie flat, so I left it curling at the edge of the page like a sail that had given up.

Above the flowers I wrote the line Tomas said was too soft for a pass. Always and forever, in the looping hand the schoolmistress in the valley beat into me with a ruler. He asked me to cross it out the winter the snow closed the gate. I didn't. I had a pencil and the mountain's permission, and I have never found a reason to do better than that.

When the cloud came down that afternoon I walked ahead of the mule and called his name at every bend, the ledger buttoned inside my coat. At the cairn the page had kept its shape. Tomas came out of the mist with the bell at the mule's neck still ringing, and I held the book up so he could see the flowers before he saw my face.
