Red poppies on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three red poppies with orange centres, surrounded by dark leaves and small buds. Bold black outlines and black shading define the petals and foliage, with flat red fill creating the main colour. The flowers fill the frame in a clustered composition on a limb photographed against a blurred outdoor background.

Mrs Venn ordered the poppies from a stencil book, and when the van came up from Ledbury the red was wrong, a brick colour that looked tired in the sun. I told her so. She said the guests came for the sea air and not for the paint, and that I should mind my brushes and leave the opinions to the gulls.

The Gull House stood at the top of Carrow Hill with its back to the wind, and the wind never stopped for anyone. By the second week of April the board over the door had split along the grain, and the flowers I'd painted on the lower edge had lifted at the corners like something trying to leave. I cut back the black outlines, glazed the petals twice, and let the orange centres dry until they were tacky enough to take a thumbprint. Mrs Venn came out with her tea and said the reds were fine now, that I'd made them look as if they meant it.
On my last morning a boy from the village came up the lane with an empty jam jar, asking whether the flowers on the board would grow if he put the seeds in the ground. The frost had taken every field on the hill that spring, so there was nothing else left to ask. I tipped a packet from my apron pocket into his hands and told him the paint would fade long before the seeds did.
By June there was one scarlet head pushing up through the gravel at the foot of the steps, too bright for the hill and not quite the right shape. Mrs Venn stepped over it every morning and never once mentioned it, which I took as the nearest thing to praise I was ever going to get.
