Dear Winnie, the wind has got under the tarpaulin again and the big wheel creaks like a wet boot, so forgive the smudges. I finished the pony last night, the one for the Hallam boy's birthday. Pink as a gobstopper, with a teal mane I curled with a fat brush and a fair bit of swearing. Mr Hallam wanted a unicorn. I told him a pony with a heart on her side was worth three unicorns, and he paid me in quid anyway.

I painted her on the lower rail of the gallopers, down by the keep wall at Carrow, where the old horses always get put. You'll remember the ruin: the arch still standing with nothing behind it but sky. Last night a girl sat on the step under that arch with a torch and watched me work. When I asked her name she said it was the same as the pony's, which I took for cheek until I saw she'd written it on her wrist in biro. She can't have been more than eight.

I handed her a brush and a jar of lemon yellow for the flower centres, and she did them far neater than I ever could. Her hand never wavered. Then her mam called from the car park and off she ran, and I didn't think more of it until this morning, when I found the jar on the step with the lid screwed tight and a stamp of thumbprint on the lid, pressed in yellow.

Come up before the season ends, love. I've left the gallopers' lamps lit for you, and the pony's still wet on the rail, so mind your sleeve.
