Unicorn and rose on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A unicorn head in profile with a horn and a flowing purple mane, its face shaded in grey with dotted detail along the jaw and neck. A pink and red rose with green leaves sits below it, with small green diamond shapes and pink hearts scattered around the design. Bold dark outlines hold the colour fills together on a pale skin background.

The sports hall still smells of floor polish and the orange squash they used to sell at break, and you have spent twenty minutes by the trestle table pretending to be interested in the name badges. Then Gemma Pollard walks in wearing a denim jacket with a purple-maned horse painted across the back, which is either a joke or a dare. You remember the unicorn she drew on the cover of her geography atlas in Year Nine, the one Mr Okafor confiscated, and how she swore it was not a horse but a sort of ambassador.

She spots you before you can hide behind the raffle table. "You still owe me a rose," she says, and you laugh because you do. The plan had been simple at fifteen: a bus to the coast, a tent borrowed from her cousin, and a field outside Lyme where the grass grew high enough to hide two people who were not supposed to be leaving town. The bus never came, and neither of you ever admitted who had lost their nerve first.
Gemma digs in the pocket of her jacket and unfolds a sheet of lined paper gone soft as cloth. It is the back page of your old maths book, with a rose in red biro, four green diamonds in the margin, and a dotted line down the neck of the horse. Underneath, in handwriting you barely recognise, someone has written "Gate. Seven. Bring the squash money." The date at the top is a Tuesday in 1998.
"I kept it," she says. "Figured one of us should." You take it, fold it along the old crease, and slip it into the pocket of your lanyard, behind a name badge that still says Hello, my name is in capitals and nothing else.
