Green bear hugging a pastel pony on a limb

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A green bear with a shamrock on its belly hugs a pastel pony with a pink, purple and yellow curled mane and matching tail. Small ice cream cone cutie marks sit on the pony's flank. Bold black outlines define the figures, with flat, soft colour fills and light shading, and the design fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had reached the third step when Mrs Pennock found the bear, still wrapped round the pony like a wet scarf. Nobody in Gullsmouth could remember the two of them apart. The pony, Sorbet, had lived on the front since the summer the ice cream van lost its brakes at the top of Quay Hill and rolled onto the lifeboat slipway, and the bear had been there long before that, with its shamrock belly and lopsided grin, hugging whatever was nearest.

She tried to lift it off. The bear did not budge. She tried rope, then a bucket of cold tea, then the sugar tongs from the van, and the bear only tightened its green arms and looked at her with the patient face of something that has been asked to let go before and refused. The pony's rainbow mane lay flat on the stone, pink and purple and yellow, and the little cones she had painted on its flank were beaded with spray.

It was Mr Abbott from the chandlery who said what she had been avoiding. "It's not holding him down, Dorothy. He's keeping him warm." The pony had not been near the water since the crash, not once, not even for the Regatta. Every wave made him flinch. The bear had simply decided that if the sea was going to come, it would have to come through him first.

So she sat on the wet step beside them, unwrapped two cones from her apron pocket, and waited. When the water finally slid back down the slipway, the pony lifted its head, and the bear, for the first time all summer, let go and blinked.
