Unicorn in an ornate gold frame

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A pink unicorn with a rainbow mane and a white horn faces right inside an ornate gold oval frame. A pink heart sits at the top of the frame and a teal bow at the bottom. Bold black outlines, flat fills and small sparkle details give it a retro cartoon look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frame came out of the rubble at Carrow Keep the week the rain finally stopped, lying face down in a drift of mortar and pigeon muck. I scraped it clean with a bread knife on the gatehouse step, and beneath the grime was a pink horse glancing to the right as if someone had just made a remark about her mane. A heart sat at the top and a teal bow at the bottom, like a valentine someone had been very serious about.

Dad said it was a toy's picture, the sort of thing sold in sweetshops to girls who had not yet learned that horses with horns were nonsense. I told him the horn was the best bit. He laughed, then went quiet, because the keep had been his grandmother's, and the last of its stones had gone to a man from Leeds without anyone asking Gran first. We were both cleaning up after somebody else's decisions.

I hung the frame in the chapel window, where the old glass was missing and the afternoon light came through in ragged coloured teeth. Each day the sun crossed the stonework and the gilt caught it, and the horse's mane threw green and violet across the flagstones in bands that drifted a little more slowly every hour.

By August the chapel had a tenant. Dad stopped calling it rubbish and started dusting it on Sundays, and when the walkers came up the lane I let them think the unicorn was medieval. It was not. It was from a shop in Doncaster, probably 1985, and it was the only thing in Carrow that had been properly finished.
