Seize the day ribbon on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A purple ribbon sits within a torn-skin effect that reveals a grey background, with the words Seize the day in black script above and below it. The ribbon has smooth shading and highlights, while the tears and background use grey and black tones. The design is centred on the calf and fills most of the frame against a dark leather backdrop.

Tamsin Vell had sold ribbon from the back of a mule cart for eleven summers on the Salt Track, and in all that time nobody had asked her what the purple was for. They asked the price. They asked whether it would hold in the wind. Hanna Cobb, who kept the last well before the dunes, asked on a morning when the sky over the flats had gone the colour of old iron.

Hanna had torn her own tent canvas the night before, a long ragged slash, because the wind had got under it and she was tired of waiting for it to decide. Through the rip she could see grey dust hanging in the air and the bones of a windmill. 'Cut it open or let it sit,' she said. 'I've done both.' Tamsin unrolled a length of violet silk and said what her grandmother used to say: a torn thing is only half lost if you go through it on purpose.
They spent the afternoon stitching the silk across the gash, looping it over the frayed edges until the tear looked less like ruin and more like a door someone had chosen to open. Hanna sang while she sewed, badly, a song about a goat that would not cross a bridge. Tamsin tied off the last knot with her teeth and spat out the loose thread.
When the storm came through at dusk, it found the canvas rippling purple at the seams and went around it. Hanna stood in the gap with her palm flat on the silk and watched the dust fall like rain on the far side of the dunes. By morning the cart was gone, and a single strip of ribbon lay coiled on the well-rope, which was how she knew Tamsin had kept going.
