Pink rose and flowers on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large pink rose with soft, blended shading dominates the forearm, with its petals curling open toward the centre. Black and grey flowers and leaves frame the top and lower sections, with a thin thorned stem running down the arm. The rose is rendered in colour while the surrounding botanical elements use greyscale shading against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pump on deck nine had been coughing for a week, and Maud Ibeku was the only one on the Thessaly Reach who would crawl into its housing with a torch in her teeth. She came out grey to the elbows, swore at the grow-lights, and went to check the roses before anything else, because the roses were the reason anyone bothered keeping the pump alive.

There were eleven bushes left in the bay, bred from cuttings the founders had carried in a sealed drawer of the seed vault, and only one still bloomed the colour the old catalogues promised. The others had gone to leaf and bramble, their greyed foliage shading into the mesh walls like pencil marks. Maud liked the pink one best because it did not apologise for itself. Its petals curled open from the centre in slow, overlapping folds, and when the lamps dimmed for night cycle the blush stayed behind after the rest of the bay had gone dark.

The stem was the difficult part. Its thorns were fine as hair and sharp enough to draw blood through a glove, and Maud had spent three years learning to work around them without thinking. Last month the grafting frame failed on the old rootstock, and she spent a whole shift on her knees splicing a new shoot onto the healthy base, counting under her breath the way her mother had taught her to count stitches. The graft took. Two green buds came up beside it, pale and stubborn.

On the morning the pump finally held, the ship's bell rang for the first time in eleven years to announce the approach of a planet none of them had seen. Maud cut the fullest bloom at its base, carried it through corridors where families still slept, and set it on the observation glass, so that the first colour anyone aboard saw of the new sky would be pink.
