Pink rose on the back of the neck
Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo
A realistic pink rose with a full, open bloom sits on the back of the neck, with two green stems and leaves extending down to the left. The petals are shaded with soft gradients of pink and red, with fine detail in the folds of the centre. The tattoo is framed by a grey top and dark hair, with the background softly out of focus.

Nobody on Scarrow Head believed the rose would take. The keeper, Tomas Pell, carried soil up the cliff path in fish creels, a load at a time, and packed it into a ring of broken slate behind the engine house. The wind came off the water hard enough to strip paint, and the first cutting died within a fortnight. He planted a second, and a third, and the village men told him to be sensible about it.

The one that lived was a pink rose, a cutting from his wife's mother's garden in Penzance, wrapped in wet sacking through the whole of the coach journey. It grew low and stubborn. Every night he lit the lamp at dusk, and every morning he went out to see whether the leaves had held through the gale. In May it opened a single bloom the colour of the inside of a shell, and the gulls, which had no interest in gardens, sat on the rail beside it and did not move.
Tomas's wife had gone out with the tide the winter before, on the Mary Ann, and the lamp was still his to keep. He kept it. When the fog came in thick enough to hide the rock, he would stand at the slate ring and cut one bloom each evening, carry it up to the gallery, and set it in a jar on the sill, so that any boat coming in blind would see something pale and warm where there should have been only grey. Nobody ever said they had seen it. Nobody ever needed to.
