Red rose with stem on upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A red rose in full bloom sits at the top of a long, thin stem with small white five-petalled flowers and shaded leaves. The rose is rendered in soft red tones with fine, detailed petal edges, while the stem, flowers and leaves are drawn in delicate black or grey linework with light shading. The design is centred on the upper back against plain pale skin, with the subject's dark hair visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Tomas, the shop was shut by nine but I stayed on past midnight because the Leeds rain had got into the cold room and the roses had started opening too early. You would have laughed. The dark red ones from the Dutch lorry had blown wide open, their outer petals curling at the edges like paper left too near a radiator.

I cut one for myself before locking up. Long stem, a sprig of the white stephanotis we keep for weddings tucked in beside it, and two leaves with grey edges that look pencilled in. I stood it in a jam jar on the counter under the strip light and sat with the shutter half down, listening to the buses on Vicar Lane sigh past the window.
At half one a man knocked on the glass wanting a bunch for his wife. He had forgotten the anniversary until the pub turned its lights off. I told him the roses were spoken for. Then I told him to take the one in the jar, because I would rather it went to somebody than wilted on my counter by morning. He paid me in coins and walked off holding it like a lit match.
I am writing this with the stem still on my mind, which is silly. Come home at Easter and I will cut you one from the back wall of Mum's yard, where the old bush is still throwing up shoots. Bring the fig jam you promised. Love, Nell.
