Pink rose with fine line circles on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A pale pink rose sits at the centre of the design, with its petals softly washed in pink. Thin black circles, straight lines and small dots radiate around it, creating a geometric frame. The composition runs vertically along the forearm, with the linework light and precise and the colour limited to the rose.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The canal company wanted the bend at Sallow Mere cut straight, and they sent a young man from London with a theodolite and no patience. I was the one who had surveyed that bend. Forty years of ledgers sat on the shelves in my front room, every reach of water pencilled in rings, each ring pivoted on a point I had pricked with my dividers and then left alone.

He laughed at the circles. "Water doesn't go round things, Mr Pell," he said, spreading his chart across my table. I didn't argue. I took down the oldest ledger and turned to the page where my wife had pressed a pink rose between the sheets the spring we married. Dolly had said a map ought to carry one soft thing, or nobody would trust the measuring. The petals had gone the colour of weak tea, but the stain still showed where the rose had bled into the paper.

He looked at that rose for a long while, then at the dots I had set around it, one for each sounding, each one exactly where the water had been and would be. "The bend is the bend because of the ground," I told him. "Cut it, and the banks will slump into the reed beds by Michaelmas." He had a letter of his own to write that night, and it was not addressed to the company.

He rolled up his chart in the morning, took the coach south, and left the theodolite on my step. I keep it beside the ledger now. The rose is still in the margin, sitting inside the last ring, where the point of the dividers went down first and never lifted.
