Pink rose with stem and leaves on skin

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pink rose with soft petal shading and a few green leaves sits at the left of the image, with a thin dark stem curling up and to the right. The rose uses soft gradients of pink and light highlights, while the stem and leaf outlines are fine and dark. The tattoo is centred on pale skin with plenty of space around it.

Dear Ada,

The rose came up on the bank behind Mrs Lowther's wash-house the week after the old fan broke down, which is the only reason I'm writing with my hands still shaking from the cage. Father says roses in a pit yard are an insult to the coal, but he's been stood at the window all morning looking at it, so I reckon he's thinking the same as me. Nobody planted it. It came up through the cinders as if it had a grudge.

I've cut the best bloom and pressed it in your old copy of Jane Eyre, at the page where Rochester writes his letter, so you'll have to forgive the thorn-prick on the margin. The petals have gone the colour of brick dust, but when the light comes through the back window they turn pink again, the way your cheeks did at the Whit Friday tea when Davy Garbutt tried to win you with a currant bun.

Mam says you're not to come home till the strike's settled, and I'd not argue with her. Stay put in Newcastle. Write to me care of the Institute, and tell me what the shops look like, and whether they've got gas lamps in every street yet.

The stem's gone curly at the top where it's reaching for the chapel wall. I've tied it to the railing with a bit of binder twine. Give it a fortnight and it'll be over the gate.

Your loving brother, Tom
