Pink rose with trailing stem and leaves
Botanical · Colour · Photo
A small pink rose sits at the end of a thin, trailing stem with grey-green leaves and buds. The rose is shaded with soft gradients of pink and a hint of glitter-like sheen, while the stem and leaves use fine dark linework with muted green shading. The design is centred on pale skin with plenty of space around it, and the colour is limited to pinks and greens.

The cutting had to go into water before the frost reached the glasshouse, so Nell wrapped the stem in wet newspaper and ran the length of the allotment in her slippers. Harold would have called that daft. He had been dead nine days, and the old pink climber on the south wall was still dropping petals onto the path that nobody swept.

The shed smelled of paraffin and bonemeal. She found his grafting knife in the biscuit tin with the bent lid, then his notebook, where every rose was a row of dates and a single word. Beside the pink climber he had written Nell, crossed it out, and written Nell's, as if the plant had been hers all along.
She cut three stems at a slant, the way he had shown her at nine, and stood them in a jam jar on the windowsill above the sink. A week on, one put out a bud the colour of boiled sweets, and then the leaves came, grey-green underneath and curling at the tips like something about to speak.
On the Sunday she carried the jar to the churchyard on the passenger seat and set it beside the plot where the stem had come from. The rose had opened by then. Its petals caught the low sun and threw a little glitter across the stone, and she thought he would have said it was showing off.
