Small colour botanical tattoo of a pink rose with green leaves and a thorned stem on the forearm.

Pink rose and thorny stem on skin

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pink rose in soft, blended shading sits at the left of the design, with dark green leaves around its base. A thin, thorned stem with small buds and leaves curves up and to the right. The rose is shaded in pink and red tones with a subtle sheen, while the leaves and stem use muted greens and fine grey-brown linework on pale skin.

The bush was the last of the Cyrenaic seedlings he had nursed through two dry summers in clay pots. Its blooms were the colour of cut plums, and the magistrate's widow, Livia, had paid him in advance to sell every one at the Forum market. Yesterday she had changed her mind. Her son was to be buried beside the Appian road, and she wanted something to lay on the stone that would not drop its petals before the procession reached the gate.

He chose a stem with three thorns and a bud still tight as a fist, wrapped it in linen soaked in cistern water, and walked out before the bakers had lit their ovens. At the tomb, Livia unwrapped it herself. She turned it in the thin morning light, touching the thorns with one finger, and said nothing for so long that he began to fear the price had been wrong.

"Thorns keep," she said at last, and set it against the stone. Teodor pressed his thumb to a thorn to test its point, felt the small sting, and looked up to see the bud at the tip beginning, very slowly, to loosen.
