Realistic colour forearm tattoo of two pink roses and a heart-shaped pocket watch with Roman numerals, with script beside it, on the inner forearm.

Pink roses and heart pocket watch on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two pink roses, one above and one below a heart-shaped pocket watch with Roman numerals and a visible inner mechanism. Leaves, beaded chain details and a partly visible line of script run along the left side of the design. The roses and leaves use soft shading and highlights, while the watch face and case are rendered in grey tones, and the design fills the forearm from the elbow side towards the wrist.

Dear Mrs Hallam, I have your husband's watch open on my bench under the good lamp, and I am sorry to say the mainspring has gone the way of all old things. You asked me to have it running by Thursday, but the heart-shaped case needs a new bow and two fresh pivots, and the glass is cracked clean across the VI.

The watch was never meant to keep a sensible hour. He had it made in Birmingham the spring the roses came up over the chapel wall, and the maker, a cross little man called Pryce, cut the Roman numerals so close to the edge that they crowd together past the twelve. I have counted them three times and got a different answer each time, which I take to be Pryce's little joke. There is nothing wrong with the escapement that a day's patience won't cure.

Inside the lid there is an engraving you did not mention, four words in copperplate: The moment met you. I asked Pryce's nephew about it when he brought the case round, and he laughed and said his uncle engraved whatever the customer paid for, no more and no less.

I have set the hands to the hour you gave me, the hour the ship docked and he came up the lane with his cap in his fist. It is ticking now, louder than a clerk's pen. I shall post it on Tuesday, insured, and you may keep the chain for a keepsake of the roses, which I have not touched.
