Pink roses on a hip

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A close crop of a bare hip and upper thigh with a cluster of three pink roses and green leaves tattooed across the skin. The petals use bold outlines and soft shading in pink and red, with darker green leaves filling the gaps around the blooms. The composition is tight on the tattoo, with a navel piercing and black lace underwear visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, and mind the cup, it is hotter than the guard at Sorrel Bridge ever was. You want the story or you want to watch me stir the sugar? Good. Then listen. Your great-grandmother Ilse had a basket of onions on her arm the morning she came over the river, and under the onions, wrapped in wet newspaper, were three stems of hedge rose, pink as a christening ribbon, with the thorns still on them.

The guard was young and had a moustache he was proud of. He lifted the onions one by one, the way you would check for a bad egg. Then he found the newspaper, and the smell came up out of it, sweet and green, and he went quiet. 'What are these?' 'Onions.' 'Onions do not smell like that.' She said nothing. The dog came over and sat on her foot, and the guard, who had been promised a promotion for finding contraband, discovered he did not want to be the one who threw away a thing that smelled of June.

He wrapped the stems back up himself, tucked them in her basket, and waved her through. Then he walked out to the barrier arm, which was hung with a dozen grey customs tags, and he tied one stem to it with a length of twine. By autumn the arm was crawling with leaves. By the spring after, the three roses had opened right where the paint had flaked, and nobody on either side has ever managed to lift that barrier without bringing a blossom down with it.
