The red cord had gone grey by the time Tamsin's brother came back down the hill road, but the knot her fingers had tied in it was still sharp. Two summers before, at the well below the barrows, Oren had hooked his little finger round hers and sworn he would not go down to the sea towns to sign on with the grain boats. He swore it the way children swear, with the whole body, and then he went anyway, in the first dry autumn, when the goats died and the debts came knocking. Every measure of salt she carried to market that winter, she carried with his promise in her mouth like a stone she could not spit out.

He was thinner than the road had been, and his boots were not his own. He did not speak. He only lifted his right hand and crooked the smallest finger, the way he had at the well, and waited.

She set the bucket down then. The salt slid over the lip and spread white across the rutted road between them, a long pale line that neither of them stepped over. She reached through the gate and hooked her finger round his, and it was warm, and it was real, and it was not the same finger she had sworn beside. "You broke it," she said. "I did," said Oren, "and I walked back every mile of it."
