Promise script on two fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two fingers are pressed side by side, and each carries the word Promise in a flowing script in dark blue-black ink. The lettering has smooth, even linework with a slight shading along the strokes, and the second word is angled to read along the finger. A silver ring is visible on a neighbouring finger against a dark background, and a small red mark sits near the top word.

Dear Ruthie, the ferry is three hours late and I have spent most of the afternoon on the slipway counting gulls, so you will forgive the ink on this page, which is from the pen Mr Hallam lent me at the chandlery. You asked in your last what I meant by promising, and I have been turning it over since, the way you turn a shell in your palm to see if anything is still living inside.

What I meant was the thing we did behind the net sheds in August, when you pressed your middle finger against mine and made me swear to it. I thought it was nonsense then. Now I think it was the only sensible thing either of us did all summer. The word you wrote on my knuckle that day was a bit smudged by the time we got home, so I have had it done properly now, in a proper shop on Harbour Street, with a man who called me love and charged me four pounds less than he said he would.
You will see it when I come back. Hold your hand up to mine, the way we did, and read it along the bone. I shan't say more in a letter. Words are only ink, and I have plenty of those on me now.
Yours, as ever and in writing, Tom
