Two fingers each carry a dark blue script tattoo of the word Promise, with a large decorative P, in a lettering style on the hand.

Promise script tattoos on two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two fingers are held side by side, each showing the word Promise in flowing script with an enlarged, looping capital P. The lettering is outlined and filled in a single dark blue or purple ink with smooth, even linework. The neutral background is dark, and a silver ring is visible on a finger of the other hand at the lower left.

The pen had run dry halfway through the second word, so Ruth leaned across the table and shook it until a bead of blue ink gathered on the nib. Her sister Nell watched from the other chair, chewing the end of her plait, while the gas lamp hissed above them. Their mother had gone to the mill early and would not be back until the whistle, and by then the promise needed to be written down somewhere it could not be unwritten.

They had settled the terms on the back step that morning. Nell would take the train to Halifax in the spring, to the typing school her aunt had paid for, and Ruth would stay behind to mind the loom money and the baby. Neither of them liked it, so they had decided to make it binding instead. Ruth drew the big looping P first, the way Miss Hargreaves had shown them on the blackboard, then the rest of the word in careful, slanting letters. Nell insisted the capital be the largest thing on the page. She said a promise ought to look like it had been shouted across a yard.

When the ink dried they pressed their fingers together, each sister showing her word to the other, the way they had done as girls to prove a secret was true. The lamp flickered and neither of them laughed.

In April the platform smelled of coal smoke and wet wool. Ruth stood at the end of it with her hand in her coat pocket, the ink faded to a grey ghost, and she kept it there all the way home so the word would not rub off on the glove.
