Pirate ship and compass rose flash design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a three-masted sailing ship with billowing sails, set against a compass rose with a star above it. Tinker Bell and dark silhouetted figures appear around the ship and waves, and the script lettering below reads Second star to the right and straight on till morning. The linework is clean and shading is greyscale, placed on a background of comic book illustrations.

The chart table lamp had gone out at half past two, so Ruth steered by the one thing the sea could not switch off. Sleet hissed against the wheelhouse glass and the Marigold lurched into another trough while Dennis wiped his spectacles on his jumper and said they ought to heave to until light.

Ruth ignored him. Her father had taught her the rhyme on the quay at Fleetwood, the one about the second star, and she had laughed at it at nine because stars in February are no use to anyone with cloud on them. She pushed open the wing window anyway. The cloud had torn along the western edge, and there it was, low over the water, steady as a pin in felt.

"Right," she said. "Straight on till morning." Dennis looked at her as though she had lost her wits, then at the star, then at the compass card swinging in its bowl. The needle agreed with neither of them, but Ruth kept the bow on the glimmer and counted the swells as they lifted under the hull like the strokes of a slow clock.

Dawn came up grey over the Isle of Man with the sea still running high. The light at Douglas stood exactly where the star had said it would. Dennis wrote the time in the log, then, underneath, in small careful letters, he wrote the name of the star, which he had never once bothered to learn.
