Pistol and dagger over a lace band on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A two-panel photograph of a thigh tattoo. The left panel shows a pistol with shaded grip and slide, and the right panel shows a dagger with a ribbed handle and the letters USA on the guard, both sitting over a scrolling lace band. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine linework in the lace pattern and strong contrast between the metal and the darker ornament.

Pell had the flare pistol in one hand and the gutting knife in the other when the Mary Ann Coyle came round the breakwater, low in the water and listing to starboard. The knife had come off a dead man's kit at the Grimsby sale, its guard stamped with letters nobody on the fleet could read without squinting. Her grandfather had sworn by it for filleting cod. Her mother had sewn the lace band in the winter the boats stayed in harbour, black cotton run through a bobbin in the front room while the wireless read the shipping forecast in a voice like an undertaker's. Pell had asked why a knife needed a garter. Her mother said a sharp thing ought to be kept where it could be reached without looking, and then bit off the thread.

The shout came up from the slip. The winch cable had fouled, and the Coyle's mate was in the water to his chest, grabbing at a rope that kept sliding out of reach. Pell fired the flare straight up. It burst red over the harbour wall, and for a moment every face on the quay was lit like a lantern, every hand pointing the same way.
