Skull and paisley on a shoulder blade
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded human skull sits on the shoulder blade, with its jaw and cheekbone outlined in fine detail. Ornate paisley-like scrolls, leaves and filigree lines spread from the skull across the upper back. The tattoo uses black and grey ink only, with soft shading on the skull and dense hatched linework in the surrounding ornament, and the photo shows both a wide view and a close-up panel.

The last of the crowds had gone home by the time Mabel Crane finished counting the takings on the lid of the cashbox. Nine shillings and a brass button. The lions had been sold to a zoo in Hull in March, and the strongman had gone to work on the docks. What remained was the wagon with the painted skull on its tailboard, and her grandfather sitting on the step beside it with a pipe he could not light.

He had told her the skull was the honest part of the show. Everything else was paint and lace, he said, the paisley scrolls and the fern-curl filigree that crept out of the bone like ivy out of a churchyard wall, but the skull knew what it was for. He had drawn it the year the big top burned at Carlisle, shading the cheekbone with a rag and a little soot, and he had never let anyone add a line to it since.
That winter a tinker came to the field with a purse of brass and asked to buy the skull for his own cart. Mabel said no. He offered more, then offered to sing, then offered to take the scrolls off the bone and leave the rest. She told him the leaves were what held the skull on the wagon. Without them it would only be a head, and a head could be bought from any surgeon in Leeds.
He left at dawn with his brass. In spring the field was ploughed, and the skull stayed where it was, pale in the furrows, its jaw grinning up at the rooks while the scrolls curled out around it into the grass. Mabel kept the cashbox under the seat of the wagon, and each evening she counted what was in it, and each evening it was the same nine shillings and the same button.
