Pit bull head with tribal eye design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A shaded grey pencil-style drawing of a pit bull's head in profile, facing left, with detailed fur, wrinkles and muzzle. A bold black tribal motif sits over the eye area, with sharp curved strokes contrasting against the soft grey shading. The plain white background and monochrome palette keep the focus on the drawing.

Cross the salt flat past the dead windmill and you'll reach the place where the road forgets its own name. My grandmother always said that was where the dog came from. She didn't mean a stray. She meant the grey one that walked out of the dust the summer the well at Sallow Wells went dry, its head low and heavy, a black ring of marks cut across one eye like a brand on a horse.

Nobody owned him. He ate what the cook threw out behind the diner and slept under the water tanker of a man called Tobias Riddle, who drove the long run to the coast and talked to himself in the mornings. Riddle swore the marks had been there the day he found the dog, curled and sharp like a thorn the wind had worn smooth. Riddle's wife said it was a map. Riddle said it was a warning. The dog only ever looked at the road.

One night a tanker went off the bend by the cattle grid, nose first into the wash, and the dog was gone from the trailer before anyone heard the crash. Riddle followed the tracks four miles in the dark and found the animal standing on the shoulder, not barking, just waiting, until he came close enough to see the driver pinned under the cab with the water pooling round his boots. They got him out with the last of the light gone and the stars thick overhead.

Riddle never learned where the dog went after that. Some say he walked back into the heat the way he came. These days the drivers slow at the cattle grid when the wind drops, and the old ones flick their headlights twice at the grey shape they think they see on the verge, sitting upright, one eye marked, watching the road for whoever is out there.
