A bold black tribal drawing of a horse head in profile, with flowing flame-like mane and tapering spikes. A large triquetra trinity knot sits across the lower neck, with three small symbols set along the neck above it. Put the kettle on again, and mind the drip by the door, because this is the one my mother told me on the nights the ward went quiet. Below Carrig there was a ford where the river split round three grey stones, and a black mare kept the crossing. Her mane rose off her neck like peat smoke in a north wind, and the smith at the cross had burned three small marks into her hide, one for each of the Doherty sisters who rode her over to the market.

The winter the river came up brown and fast, the youngest sister, Nuala, slipped from the saddle halfway over. The current had her by the skirts and was dragging her under the stones. The mare turned back into the flood, caught the girl's shawl in her teeth, and walked the whole width of the ford with the water up to her ears, never once lifting her hooves off the bottom.

Nobody on the bank saw how she managed it. They saw a black horse standing in the shallows at dawn with her head bowed low over the water, and a girl wrapped in a blanket on the stones beside her. The sisters swore the knot the smith had cut into the mare's neck had drawn tight in the night, the way a rope does when someone on the far end refuses to let go.

Nuala lived to be old and never rode again. Her grandson told me the marks are still on every black horse born at Carrig, if you look close, and the knot is always there, going round and round and never once letting go. Now mind the cup, it's hot, and go and see to bed nine before the night sister finds you dawdling.
