Pixel heart on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small heart built from square pixels sits on the inner forearm, with a solid red fill and a black outline, plus a lighter highlight on the upper left of the shape. The heart is crisp and evenly stepped, with the blocky edges typical of retro pixel art. The plain grey background and black dress keep the focus on the red and black tattoo, with a thin dark cord visible around the wrist.

The grid-wardens of Hollin Reach said a heart could only be drawn in squares, because the old makers had given the first one eight cells by eight and nothing finer was allowed. Mara heard this every winter from her mother, who said it while she stitched the broken tiles of the orchard wall back into place.

The trouble came the year the river froze to the bottom, three hundred years after the makers had gone under a sky the colour of old tin. Mara's brother Oren went out across the ice to fetch the salt barrel from the far bank and did not come back by dark. The wardens lit the red glass lantern on the wall, but its light reached only as far as the first willow. Mara took the lantern down, wrapped it in her coat, and walked to the ice's edge with a pot of black paint.
She did not know how to draw a heart that would travel. Her mother had always said a heart was only a set of steps going up and down, one cell at a time, so that the eye could climb it. So Mara painted a heart on the ice with its dark edge first and filled it red, stepping left and right in the dark, each square as wide as her palm. At the upper left she left one lighter cell, where the lantern caught it, so the shape would shine.
Oren saw the red before he saw the ground. He followed the blocks home one step at a time, the way the old rule said, and when he reached the wall his sister was kneeling in the snow with raw hands. Every winter after, the children of Hollin Reach paint one small heart on the frozen river before the first snowfall, and nobody walks the ice without counting the steps.
