Small outline heart on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single small heart is drawn in a thin, unshaded black outline on the inner upper arm. The arm is shown in close crop against a pale lace dress and a plain cream wall. The fine, even linework is the only ink, with no shading or fill.

The snow closed the pass on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the only people left at the Hollin Gate Inn were my uncle, who would not let anyone pay for coal, a commercial traveller who had stopped complaining, and a woman who came in off the road with a rucksack and a borrowed torch. She asked for the room at the top of the back stairs, the one that looked over the frozen mill race, and she paid in coins she counted out twice.

She didn't talk much. Mostly she sat by the kitchen range with a mug going cold between her hands and watched the window over the sink, where the steam from the washing-up gathered and ran. On the second night I found a shape in the mist on the glass: a single heart, drawn in one unbroken line with no fill and no initials. Just the outline, neat and thin, as if she had done it with the very tip of a fingernail and wanted to be sure of its edges.
"My mother used to do that," I said, meaning nothing by it. The woman nodded as if I had said something sensible. "Mine drew them on the bathroom mirror. I never asked her what they were for. I think she only wanted to know she could still draw a line that closed." Uncle Pell came in stamping snow off his boots and the conversation ended there.
The thaw came on the Sunday, with a drip from every gutter. Her room was empty, the bed made tight, the rucksack gone. The window over the sink had cleared, but the heart was still there, pale on the glass where the warm air had never quite reached. I left it alone and wiped the rest of the sink around it, and I have never cleaned it off.
