Three small houses on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small house shapes are stacked vertically on the inner forearm, each with a pitched roof and a rectangular body. The houses are filled or heavily shaded in black ink, with some small white and dotted details in the windows and doors. The photograph shows the arm extended against a plain grey background, with a denim shirt and dark trousers visible at the edge of the frame.

Mind the step, the boards are soft where the rain got in. Out past the salt flats there were three houses standing in a line like children waiting for a bus. The first was Ada Pell's, its roof pointed at the sky as if it meant to leave. The second belonged to her brother Tom, who painted his window frames black so the sun would not steal his furniture. The third stood empty, its door hanging off one hinge, and the wind used it as a cupboard.

Every October the dry storm came down the valley to test their roofs. Ada went out first, always, in her late husband's boots, checking the ridges with a spirit level she had bought from a man in Dunmore who swore it once belonged to a bishop. Tom stayed indoors counting nails. They did not speak for eleven years over a goat that wandered from one yard into the other. But when the storm peeled the roof off the empty house, it was Tom who crossed the gravel at dawn with two planks on his shoulder and a hammer in his belt.
I asked my grandfather which of them had been right. He said that was the wrong question for a road like this one. The question was which window had a lamp left burning. Ada kept hers lit, Tom kept his dark, and when the traffic from the coast had nowhere else to stop, the empty house got a lantern hung in its doorway that nobody could quite remember lighting.
So if you pass them, count the roofs. Three of them, and one lamp that somebody always comes back to trim.
