Key tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person sits cross-legged on a cream blanket with their hands clasped together, wearing a knitted jumper with the sleeves pushed up. A small key is drawn on the outer forearm in thin, dark grey linework with light shading in the bow and bit. The soft, warm lighting and pale tones keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ruth,

The key is still in my coat pocket, the one for the flat above the bakery on Vrbova Street, and I have taken it out at every checkpoint since March, the way other people touch a rosary. The guard at Hrušov asked what it opened. I said a door I had not been through in eleven years. He laughed and waved me on, which I suppose is what a key is for: it makes someone else's business of you small.

You will remember the bow was worn almost round by our father's thumb. The bit has a notch filed by a locksmith who never once came to the house. I had Dani draw it on my arm before the train, in biro first and then properly, because I wanted something I could not leave in a drawer. She said it looked like a thing a child would copy from a library book. I said that was the point.

Mrs Hájková has the keys to the bakery now, and she says the ovens still ring on cold mornings the way they did when we were small. I have not decided whether I will knock. The bus leaves at six, and I have found, to my surprise, that I want to be on it before I can change my mind.

Tell Mum I am coming home, and that I have the key.
