Plate armour and heraldic shield on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of ornate plate armour covers the shoulder and upper arm, with a pauldron at the top and a heraldic shield with a quartered pattern and small motifs at the centre. Layered plates, rivets and etched scrollwork are shaded with smooth grey gradients and strong highlights, giving the metal a three-dimensional look. A band of chainmail sits across the middle of the arm against a dark, softly lit background.

The crate came aboard at Brentford with a broker's tag on it and the wrong weight for what it claimed to hold. Ada Pell had worked the Grand Union for thirty years and trusted her nose over any paperwork. It smells of oil and church dust, she said. I told her it was only old iron, and she gave me the look she kept for lock-keepers who argued about tolls.

That night, under the tarpaulin, we unpacked a left arm of plate from pauldron to vambrace. The rivets were still bright in their seams where somebody had kept them oiled for centuries, and a quartered shield sat on the elbow, its squares dotted with small round marks like coins scattered on a board. Ada ran her thumb along a band of mail and said the links were riveted, not welded, so the maker had worked by hand and expected to be struck.
The ledger called it a decorative arm, Warwick house, sold on. We did not sell it on. We ran north with the lamp swinging and the arm wrapped in sacking across my knees, past locks where the water lay flat as slate and the reeds stood up stiff with frost. At Stoke Bruerne Ada buckled it onto her own forearm, awkward and laughing, and the lock-keeper's boy stopped whistling to stare.
"Who's it for?" he asked. Ada looked at the shield, then at the black water filling the lock, and said, "Whoever's next to carry it." She shut the gate herself, and the lamplight slid off the scrollwork as the barge sank slowly into the dark.
