Dear Teuila, the frangipani tree by the old cannery finally flowered again after the storm, and I thought of you carrying the cuttings down the hill in your mother's basket. Half the village says plumeria only grows where someone has promised to come back. The other half says it is just a tree that drops its blooms on the road and makes a mess of the bus stop. I have been sweeping the petals off the steps every morning for a week and calling it a chore.

He asked after you, and I told him you were in Auckland learning to cut hair, which is what you told me, so I have to assume it is true. He laughed and said nobody who learns to cut hair ever comes back smelling of sea salt, so I should stop watching the water.
I kept one bloom from the tree, pressed flat inside my school atlas at the page for the Cook Islands. It has gone the colour of weak tea now, pale at the edges, the yellow gone to cream. When I hold it to the window the petals still have that curl at the tips, like they are about to lift off and leave. I am not writing to ask you to come home. I am writing to say the tree is still here, and so am I, and the steps are swept.
