Pocket watch and cherry blossom on a shoulder blade

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A pocket watch with Roman numerals and an ornate bow sits at the centre of the design, with its face partly obscured by branches of red cherry blossom. Soft grey shading gives the watch and the swirling smoke-like background depth, while teal streaks and scattered falling petals add colour. The design wraps across the shoulder blade and upper back.

The watch has stopped again, and you are kneeling in the cloister grass with its case open on your knee, trying to decide whether the fault is the mainspring or your own clumsy fingers. Brother Anselm would have known in a glance. He wound the abbey clocks for forty-one years and never once let the Prior hear him swear at a gear train, though the whole chapter knew when he was losing an argument with brass.

Above you the old cherry is letting go of itself. Petals come down on the wind off the Clun hills, skating across the flagstones and catching in the wet grooves of the stone, and a few stick to your sleeve as you work. You remember the day he tilted the watch so the light from the chapter-house window crossed the Roman numerals, and told you a clock was only a promise to come back to the same place. He said it like a joke. You did not laugh.

The balance wheel sits motionless under its bridge. You coax it with a breath and a nudge of the bow, and it shivers, catches, and begins to tick, small and stubborn as a heartbeat held in a cupped hand. The hour hand creeps toward the seven. Somewhere in the orchard a bell starts for Vespers, and you realise you have been counting its strokes without meaning to, the way you once counted his breaths in the infirmary.

When the bell finishes you close the case, leaving one petal pressed against the glass where the twelve should be. You slip the watch into your habit and stand. The blossom goes on falling, the watch goes on counting, and neither of them is in any hurry to agree with you about what time it is.
